Abstract:

Carbon capture, utilization and storage CO2 (CCUS) is considered an important solution in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially for some industries, such as cement, iron and steel, Coal thermal power, oil and natural gas exploitation... From another perspective, CCUS also supports the carbon circular economic model in reusing, recycling and removing CO2, which is 3 out of 4 pillar of carbon cỉrcular economy. From the above perspective, the article overviews the situation of CCUS development in the world, synthesizes researches being implemented in Vietnam and make a preliminary assessment:• Potential for CO2 storage in exhausted oil and gas fields and in Vietnam's groundwater bodies;• Current status and forecast of CO2 emissions in Vietnam;• Forecasting market demand for CO2 use in Vietnam;• Research on CO2 storage in Vietnam and initial assessment of costs and prices;Based on the overview, the article identifies a number of conditions for the development of CCUS hubs, where depleted oil and gas fields are concentrated, as well as emission sources from power plants, fertilizer plants, and industrial production in Vietnam. The article also proposes perspectives and roadmaps for implementing CCUS in Vietnam, as well as policies for establishing a carbon market and legal framework for implementing CCUS projects. Those are also solutions to deploy carbon circular economy in Vietnam's energy sector.
