Abstract:
Openings are often required in the masonry walls of buildings to accommodate windows, doors or services. A horizontal beam is usually required to support the load above the opening. Typically a horizontal beam may be of timber, stone, steel, concrete, reinforced concrete or brickwork construction. This paper describes the two dimensional computational model (distinct element - UDEC) to simulate the behaviour of a single unreinforced brickwork wall panel with a 1.38 m opening subjected to vertical, uniform distribution, in-plane static loading. The results show that the distinct element model is most suitable to simulate the different stages of behaviour from initial crack development, crack propagation at stages of increased loading and the mode of failure of masonry wall.
